This note comes after a long conversation that I had with my friends at our favorite mamak stall in Kepong. It was a normal “yum cha” session but it got pretty intellectual I may say…We were talking about blogs and how it has been so influential and stuff.
One of our friend’s brother bears the same surname of a very famous blogger in Malaysia and he created one and it’s more like a funnier version of that famous blogger. Well, that’s when the fun began and it ended up to the topic of politics too which came to the discussion of people like Raja Petra and even about the guy who sang the National anthem in a different way. Both my friends, had their own views on the statements on how blogs are monitored by the government and all….To me I feel that how liberal we are, can be the deciding factor to make the answers to this (Correct me if I am wrong).
As to the dictionary, the word “LIBERAL” means favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affair or favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.
Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Different forms of liberalism may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy, and a transparent system of government.
Liberal has taken a new form nowadays and it has blown out of proportions at times. It is good some people use it for the right reasons but at times it just doesn’t make sense. For example, the rights for education must be rightly discussed in an open platform rather than being a “Taboo” topic to be spoken till that there must be a demonstration regarding the matter. Is it wrong to speak about education in a more liberal way? Or we just keep our mouths shut and not speak about one of the basic needs of humans that is education that will sustain the whole nation. I mean knowledge is free and it should be obtained by every single Malaysian be it Malay, Chinese or Indian.
The general public in Malaysia actually goes with the flow but there are only a handful of people think liberally in my opinion…but at times the government knows what to do at the right time but at times it’s uncalled for. For a developing nation like us, there must be a way where new and radical things to happen but in a controlled environment. As the media is growing in new ways, more people are turning towards the media to express their views and thoughts. Liberal thinking is brought to a new level as the term “NEW Media” is emerging in its own way.
Things like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Friendster, and many other sites that has the social networking nature is also a place where liberal ideas and thoughts can be formed and easily. There are so many groups on Facebook for instance that promote liberalism and young people are not afraid to express their views on what they think about politics, life, religion and many other facades of life. The whole idea of “New Media” is also a way where globalization comes in to the picture and takes liberalism into a whole new level.
According to Wikipedia, the term “New Media” means, “Any digital media production that is interactive and digitally distributed.” They make the distinction between “new” media and media on the basis of it’s accessibility and transmission and its interactive nature, which will be the most defining feature for future new media development
Looks like the internet is the new way of liberal ideas and thoughts are disseminated but end of the day it takes people, human being like you and me to make some liberal ideas to work. At times it takes one man or woman to be radical and stand for what they want to achieve.
So, how liberal are you in your thoughts? It all depends on you….and of the day being liberal is cool and gives you a sense of freedom of how we perceive things around us but make sure those liberal thoughts has a strong underlining and a good cause that will make you look smart and make people wonder about those thoughts that will bring a new and fresh revolution personally and to the world.
“Of all the variety of virtues, liberalism is the most beloved” – Aristotle
